Seeds, Plants, Flowers, Gardens, and More
My Garden
This is my garden, I'll plant it with care,
Here are the seeds I'll plant in there,
The sun will shine,
The rain will fall,
The seeds will sprout and grow up tall.
I'm A Little Green Weed Sung to: "I'm A Little Teapot"
I'm a little green weed
Growing fast
I'm hiding in the garden
But I won't last
Someone's going to find me
And give a shout
Then bend right over
And pluck me out!
Seeds
A little seed for me to sow
A little earth to make it grow
A little hole, a little pat,
A little wish, and that is that,
A little sun, a little shower.
A little while -
And then, a flower!
Seeds
Some seeds fall
And some seeds float
Some seeds ride
On a kitten's coat.
Some are large
And some are small
Some you can scarcely
See at all.
Some are round
And some are flat
Some have stickers
And things like that.
And something else
That's nice to know -
When you plant a seed,
It starts to grow.
It might be a flower
It might be a weed
But something grows
From most every seed.
My Plant
I dig a hole and plant a seed,
Cover it with dirt, and pull a weed.
Down comes the rain, and out comes the sun,
Up grows my plant,
Oh! What fun!
Oats, Peas, Beans and Barley Grow
Oats, peas, beans and barley grow,
Oats, peas, beans and barley grow,
Can you or I or anyone know
How oats, peas, beans and barley grow?
First the farmer sows his seed,
Stands erect and takes his ease,
Stamps his foot and claps his hands,
And turns around to view his lands.
Oats, peas, beans and barley grow,
Oats, peas, beans and barley grow,
Can you or I or anyone know
How oats, peas, beans and barley grow?
Next the farmer waters the seed,
Stands erect and takes his ease,
Stamps his food and claps his hands,
And turns around to view his lands.
Oats, peas, beans and barley grow,
Oats, peas, beans and barley grow,
Can you or I or anyone know
How oats, peas, beans and barley grow?
Next the farmer hoes the weeds,
Stands erect and takes his ease,
Stamps his foot and claps his hands
And turns around to view his land.
Oats, peas, beans and barley grow,
Oats, peas, beans and barley grow,
Can you or I or anyone know
How oats, peas, beans and barley grow?
Last the farmer harvests his seed,
Stands erect and takes his ease,
Stamps his foot and claps his hands
And turns around to view his land.
Oats, peas, beans and barley grow,
Oats, peas, beans and barley grow,
Can you or I or anyone know
How oats, peas, beans and barley grow?
Daffodils
One little daffodil had nothing much to do,
Out popped another one, then there were two.
Two little daffodils were smiling at a bee,
Out popped another one, then there were three.
Three little daffodils were growing by the door,
Out popped another one, then there were four.
Four little daffodils were glad to be alive,
Out popped another one, then there were five.
Five little daffodils were wearing golden crowns,
They danced in the breeze in green satin gowns.
The Little Plant
In the heart of a seed,
Buried deep so deep
A tiny plant
Lay fast asleep.
"Wake," said the sunshine
"And creep to the light."
"Wake," said the voice
Of the raindrops bright.
The little plant heard
And it rose to see,
What the wonderful
Outside world might be.
Flower and Garden Crafts for Kids
Step-By-Step Directions for Making Stepping Stones
Potato Heads
Cut the top off of a potato. Create a stand by cutting a section off of a paper towel tube and sitting the
potato on the ring (1"- 2" ring). Scoop out about 1/2 of the inside of the potato leaving the outside intact.
Have children decorate their potato head... add ears, eyes, nose, mouth with construction paper, googly eyes, string,
felt... whatever materials you have to provide. When dry, spoon potting soil to fill 1/2 the hole. Add grass seed.
Top with potting soil. Place near a sunny window and water daily... soon the potato heads will need a 'haircut'!
Sunflowers
Have children glue yellow petals around a paper plate. Add a black circle to the center and a stem to the back -
children can make their sunflower as tall as they'd like :). If you have no peanut allergies, children can glue real
sunflower seeds to the center black circle. These look great as a garden display on the wall.
Egg Cup Tulips
Cut an egg cup into a tulip shape by creating triangles from the top. Have children paint several in their
choice of colours. When dry, add pipecleaner stems.
Cupcake Liner Flowers
Have children glue cupcake liners to their paper. Cut a stem and leaves from construction paper to
complete their flowers. They can create a garden of pretty coloured pastel flowers from the multi-coloured packs.
To finish off the bottom of the picture, they may want to fringe grass or add brown paper for soil.
Do Plants Need Light?
Use two identical plants and place in window, cover one with a box and observe daily to see what is happening to the two plants.
Do Plants Need Water?
Use two identical plants and observe what happens when one is watered daily and the other isn't.
Bean Plants
Place bean seeds onto a wet paper towel in a styrofoam cup and watch them sprout. Once the stalk has started to grow
sturdy and has a leaf or two on it, add soil to the styrofoam cup and plant the bean plant. When larger, children can
take home and transplant into their gardens or transplant them into a childcare garden and harvest the crop together.
Flower Shop
Set up the dramatic play area with plastic flowers, flower pots, gardening gloves, plastic gardening tools, and cash register. Print seed packets on
card paper and set up a seed stand.
Garden
Set up an area of the yard for a garden. Plant vegetables and/or flowers then have the children help care for them throughout the season.
