Eggs

Crafts

*Egg shell collage - glue egg shells onto card paper. Egg shells should be thoroughly washed before using.

*Humpty Dumpty - blow the inside out of an egg and wash thoroughly, cut a t.p. tube in 1/2 and paint, when dry, glue the egg onto the tube stand; add a face using contruction paper or permanent markers; cut legs, arms, hands, and feet from construction paper and glue on

*Chicks in an egg - dip a cotton ball in yellow dry tempera then add beak and eyes, place in a cleaned 1/2 egg shell or a cup from an egg carton

*Paint white (or brown) egg shape and add yellow yolk circle from construction paper

*Blow eggs and decorate the shells

*Egg shakers - put some rice or corn kernals into a water bomb balloon. Blow up the balloon and tie. Cover with paper maché and let dry for a day or two. Cut a small hold and cut the balloon leaving the rice/corn kernals inside but removing the balloon. Patch the hole and let dry. Paint when dry.

Science

*egg in a jar - use a juice jar and a hard boiled egg. Light a match and place upside down in the jar until it goes out - place a hard boiled (peeled) egg on mouth - the lack of oxygen in the jar and the pressure from the air outside will push the egg into the jar

*observe how an egg changes when cooked

*sort and match pictures of eggs to their owners

*hatch eggs in an incubator

*egg sound shakers - add pairs of items to plastic eggs for children to match the sounds

Dramatic Play

*set up a restaurant & have plastic eggs for "cracking" and play food

*go for a nature walk and look for bird nests in trees - discuss different coloured eggs that may be in the nests

Field Trips / Special Days

*visit a farm that has chickens

*have an egg baking day - most recipe's use eggs

*have a green eggs and ham day - make cat in the hat hats, eat green eggs and ham for lunch, play rhyming games, and make puppets/props to act out the story
